Meet Dr Candice Jacobson

Dr Candice Jacobson is a Specialist General Psychiatrist practising in Cape Town. She is passionate about mental health, providing a patient-centred evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of mental illness. 

2001 - Present

Dr Jacobson graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2001. Following community service, she gained experience working in the UK in a variety of medical disciplines before returning to South Africa in 2006. Since then she has worked in paediatrics, general practice, and freelanced as a clinical editor on behalf of the BMJ evidence centre before finally finding her true passion in psychiatry. She joined the UCT psychiatry registrar programme in 2012 completing her studies in 2016.

 

Areas of special interest include consultation-liaison psychiatry, women’s mental health, child and adolescent psychiatry and forensic psychiatry.  

Since qualifying as a psychiatrist she has spent time working as a consultant and senior lecturer in the UCT Department of Psychiatry’s Division of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (including running the maternal mental health clinic) based at Groote Schuur Hospital, as well as the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry based at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.  

In addition to the above, Dr Jacobson established a private general psychiatry practice in 2017 seeing in- and out-patients of all ages, including hospital-based consultations. Until recently she was also a sessional psychiatrist at UCT Student Wellness.
